The Breaking Down
03:23
|
|||
We didn’t have a match
We tried to start a fire with sticks
Some of them splintered and cracked
We threw the rest into a ditch
We lay down on the ground
And listened to the leaves shake their trees
And laughed as they danced in the breeze
We fell in love and love was so easy
Who’s in charge here, who belongs here
Who’s in charge here, who belongs here
The wind started moving so fast
We barely had time to react
And apples fell hard from the bough
Its breaking now, breaking now
And some of us want to believe
That love will set us free
But freedom isn’t enough
When fruit is rotting in the fields
Who’s in charge here, who belongs here
Who’s in charge here, who belongs here

Mothers
04:19
|
|||
Your eyes are wide and in your hands
You carry seashells and a ring found in the sand
A strip of red and gold brocade
A chain of seaweed you untangled from your hair
You were once so free that you were even wilder than the sea
And you moved the moon and brought the waves directly to your feet
And you took what you could take
But now your eyes are hard and small
And in your hand the only thing that keeps you warm
A glass of wine, a bitter taste
But better than the thoughts you try to wash away
You were once so free that you were even wilder than the sea
And you moved the moon and brought the waves directly to your feet
And a song inside you sang
Wouldn’t you like to feel the sand in you hair and on your feet
And wrap the air around your skin
And feel the sting of salt against your cheek
Wouldn’t you like for just this once
You could be seen, you could be heard
And you could live without the pain
Of not being loved
Again and again
To be wild to be free
to be free to to be wild
You were once so free that you were even wilder than the sea
And you moved the moon and brought the waves directly to your feet
And you took what you could take

Black Dog
06:23
|
|||
You loved me so much that you gave me the sun
But the heat became heavy so you dragged it back down
And you threw up the moon with the flick of your thumb
And scattered all the stars with the swing of your arm
How can I laugh and how can I cry
When I stretch my gaze across the sky
How can I laugh and how can I cry
When I’m standing on the edge of endless time
You wanted me to smile so you gave me the clouds
To cover up the sun and cool me down
You carved a cathedral and filled it with beasts
Who howled at the altar of my endless feasts
How can I laugh and how can I cry
When I stretch my gaze across the sky
How can I laugh and how can I cry
When I’m standing on the edge of endless time
You thought you saw me cry so you swallowed the sky
And the eyes of a black dog sitting in the clouds
But I longed for the moon and the stars and the sun
So you threw back your head and you spit it out again
How can I laugh and how can I cry
When I stretch my gaze across the sky
How can I laugh and how can I cry
When I’m standing on the edge of endless time

Kneading
04:11
|
|||
She had sugar on her shoes and flour on her cheeks
Her hands were often cracked and sometimes they would bleed
She gathered all the grain and measured out the yeast
And she began to knead and knead and knead
She wrote a couple tunes on an old accordian
And broke a couple hearts whenever she would sing them
And some folk even said she looked like Judy Garland
But when she clicked her heels she was still on the same cold island
And sometime in her youth she cycled to the country
And there she met a man and started up a family
And he would write her poems and listen to her singing
But one day his heart just stopped and she went back to kneading
Now Frances Ethel Gumm is lighting up the stage
And fighting off the crowds and gathering accolades
But what about the girl who looked like Judy Garland
Well she sits on a stool and kneads on the same cold island
And what about the girl who looked like Judy Garland?
Well she sits on a stool and kneads and kneads and kneads

Beekeeper
03:15
|
|||
You said I should write about ghosts
Because I’m so good at digging up bones
But I’ve spent so much time at the wheel
That I’ve sharpened away all my tools
Maybe I’m just getting tired
of sweeping the leaves in the gutter
Maybe I want to grow flowers
And bring all the bees to the garden
I have the sun in my eyes
Why am I surprised that I have the sun in my eyes?
There’s something I think you should know
I’m no longer the girl you once knew
The seed that was planted inside me
Grew to become something lovely
And now i think only of flowers
Of Hyssops and Sweet Little Goldstars
And what has become of my anger
I’ve buried it under the Clover
I have the sun in my eyes
Why am I surprised that I have the sun in my eyes?

This Rock
05:09
|
|||
You want devotion from all of your lovers and friends
That kind of love is unreal and leaves you heartbroken
And like a boat on the sea that is chained to a rock
The waves won’t save you, they’ll chase you and break you apart
I want devotion from all of my lovers and friends
That kind of love is unreal and leaves me heartbroken
And like a boat on the sea that is chained to a rock
The waves won’t save me, they’ll chase me and break me apart
We want devotion from all of our lovers and friends
That kind of love is unreal and leaves us heartbroken
This rock is not the one you want
This rock is going to trip you up
This rock will cut you in the dark
This rock is tearing us apart
This rock is not the one you want
This rock will trip you in the dark
This rock is going to cut you up
This rock is tearing us apart
Tearing us apart
Tearing us apart
Tearing us apart

The Robin
04:22
|
|||
I wanted to fly but I had no wings
So i sat and i watched a Robin sing
She darted her head from right to left
She tucked in her wings and she puffed her chest out
Why won’t she fly, i asked myself
Why does she stay so near the ground
If i could fly, if i had wings
I’d leave this rotten earth beneath
This robin stood so near to me
I could see her pulse through her small red chest
And she didn’t flinch when i called out
She just hopped to the left and she puffed her chest out
Why won’t she fly, i asked myself
Why does she stay so near the ground
If i could fly, if i had wings
I’d leave this rotten earth beneath
Not the snap of a branch or a falling twig
Or the thud of a door or a foxes scream
Or the blare of a horn or the cry of a babe
Could scare this robin off and then
And then she sang, she sang to me
As the sun came out and the heat kicked in
She sang to the brambles and the roses hips
As I pressed the blossoms to my lips
If I could fly, if I had wings
I’d fly back down to hear the robin sing
She’d sing to brambles and the roses hips
As I pressed the blossoms to my lips

Dog-Eared Rose
04:52
|
|||
I saw a dog-eared rose
Burnt by the sun and the rays that it throws
Whipped by the wind and the dust that it blows
Covered in scratches across her sweet nose
Once cheek was sagging, depressed by the heat
The other was beauty before she met beast
Like a good book that’s been loved for too long
Some of her pages were tattered or gone
Gathered around were the trails of the dead
Withering warnings of how things could end
Some had been lost to the cold bitter truth
Others were plucked by the greediest fools
On her slim body was a trap she had laid
A thorn for each day of the month she had stayed
One for the rabbit and one for the deer
One for the dogs who’d come dangerously near
Now this old rose with the ears of a dog
Can still hear the thrush and he sings his sweet song
And still stands as tall as the neighbouring tree
And still has the prickles to fight off the beasts
So don’t you go picking old rosie for me

Walls
03:52
|
|||
If these walls could talk
They’d probably say they heard enough love songs
I heard a love song from across the hall
The singer said she wished she knew just how to let you go
And though she cried all night and barely slept at all
She said she’d give you one more chance
Because she likes the way she feels
When it is good
It feels
So good
And if these walls could talk
They’d probably say they heard enough love songs
But if these walls could sing
They’d probably sing about their broken hearts
Because it feels
so good
To sing
about love
Another song comes on, this time a different tone
The bow and arrow falls, the pen becomes a sword
Because it feels
So good
To sing
About love
And if these walls could talk
They’d probably say they heard enough love songs
But if these walls could sing
They’d probably sing about their broken hearts
Because it feels
So good
To sing
About love

Anti-War Lullaby
03:04
|
|||
You asked me why we go to war
What am I supposed to say?
Most of us want to live in peace
But we struggle to do it with ease
Don’t cry, baby, please don’t cry
The truth is I don’t have an answer
I was born in the right time and place
But I know that you’re frightened
Of the pain you imagine it brings
Don’t cry, baby, please don’t cry
So put your head on my shoulder
While i wipe the tears off your cheeks
I can’t protect you forever
But tonight I can rock you to sleep
Don’t cry, baby, please don’t cry
